All-Star Eugenio Suarez returns to Mariners
Eugenio Suarez bolsters Mariners’ playoff hopes
All-Star Eugenio Suarez, the top bat available during this July 31 trade deadline, is heading back to Seattle, according to multiple reports. Less than two years after they gave up on him, the Mariners reacquired the slugging third baseman from the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The news of the trade was greeted warmly by the Mariners.
“I think it’s just going to take some pressure off some guys,” All-Star catcher Cal Raleigh told Mariners beat writers. “Whether they admit it or not, maybe guys are trying to overcook things and when you try to overdo it, try to swing harder, usually that doesn’t help. Everybody usually wants to be the guy.”
Suarez, 34, earned his second National League All-Star berth this year. With 36 home runs and 87 RBIs he’s the first player in Major League Baseball history to be traded with so many home runs at the trade deadline.
ESPN broke the news of the trade late Wednesday night. Several outlets confirmed it, including the Mariners’ official website. Arizona will receive first base prospect Tyler Locklear and minor-league relievers Hunter Cranton and Juan Burgos, according to the Mariners’ official website.
Powerful lineup
The Mariners will now have MLB’s home run and RBI leaders in the same lineup. Raleigh is leading the majors with 41 home runs, three more than Shohei Ohtani. Aaron Judge and Kyle Schwarber, with 37 apiece, are the only other players with more home runs this season than Eugenio Suarez.
Raleigh and Suarez are tied for the MLB lead in RBIs. According to OptaSTATS, the Mariners will join the 1961 Yankees as the only teams in MLB history with two players with at least 35 home runs on Aug. 1. Roger Maris had 40 home runs, and Hall of Famer Mickey Mantle had 39 on Aug. 1, 1961.

Orioles rookie Ramón Urias realizing his dreams
“He’s pretty much everything you look for in a teammate,” Raleigh said of Suarez in an interview with the Seattle Times late Wednesday. “He’s supportive. Super nice. Keeps it light in the room.
“Always positive. And you add on to that, he’s a great player. He’s uplifting. Brings guys together. We saw that when he was here the first time, and we were obviously all sad that he left, but we’re happy that he’s coming back.”
Astros acquire Ramon Urias
The Mariners beat out several suitors to complete the trade for Suarez. The AL West-leading Astros had inquired about Suarez, Carlos Correa and Nolan Arenado.

The Astros are in need of a third baseman because All-Star Isaac Paredes suffered what is likely a season-ending hamstring injury. They are replacing one Mexican star from Sonora with another.
The Astros have reportedly landed former Gold Glove winner Ramon Urias via trade with the Orioles. Urias is one of only a handful of Mexico natives to have earned a Rawlings Gold Glove.
In 2022, Urias became the fourth native of Mexico to win a Gold Glove and the first since 1986. The Astros have put a prime value on defense this season. They’ll now have Gold Glove winners at first (Christian Walker), second when Mauricio Dubon plays second, short with Jeremy Peña and third with Urias.
