App State QB Joey Aguilar sets more records

Joey Aguilar leads Latinos in college football in Week 3

Joey Aguilar is all over the App State record books already, so it should be no surprised that he added his name to another list. The 6-foot-3, 220-pounder from Antioch, Calif.,  had one of the best passing performances in school history Saturday.

Aguilar threw for a career-high 424 yards and two touchdowns, leading App State to 21-19 victory over East Carolina. After such a stellar showing, he earned Our Esquina’s Latino Player of the Week honors for Week 3 in college football.

Joey Aguilar completed 32 of 47 passing attempts with a pair of interceptions. He showed why he was picked as the Sun Belt Conference’s Preseason Offensive Player of the Year.

Facing a 16-0 deficit in the first quarter, Aguilar rallied his teammates to a come-from-behind victory. After setting App State single-season records for passing yards (3,757) and touchdowns (33) in 2023, Joey Aguilar already has passed for 964 yards through three games this season.

Joey Aguilar adds another record

His 424 yards against East Carolina were the most passing yards ever on the road for an App State quarterback. It was also the third highest output in school history, only nine yards shy of the record Armanti Edwards set in 2008.

The Mountaineers’ contest against East Carolina featured a rare duel between Latino quarterbacks. Both young men looked good.

Jake Garcia delivered an incredible performance. The junior from Whittier, Calif., threw for 226 yards, completing 18 of 28 passing attempts with a touchdown. The Missouri transfer’s longest pass went for 65 yards.

Garcia spent his first two years at Miami. He transferred to Missouri for his junior year, but he didn’t see any action last year for the Tigers.

Xavier Restrepo and Hurricanes feast

Xavier Restrepo was a force to be reckoned with in Miami’s 62-0 rout over the Ball State Cardinals. Restrepo had three catches for 47 yards and two touchdowns. Tight end Elijah Arroyo wasn’t going to be left out of the highlight reel against Ball State. Arroyo made two receptions for 53 yards and a touchdown.

He caught a 21-yard touchdown pass and also had a 32-yard reception. Over the last three games, Arroyo has hauled in seven receptions for 159 yards. Kicker Andres Borregales added a pair of field goals and five PATs for the Hurricanes.
