Second chances: Pete Rose, Javy Baez, surging Twins

  • May 16, 2025

In the latest episode of Plákata Nation, Carlos Peña, Rodney Peña and Jesus Ortiz discussed second chances in baseball, especially the one that Pete Rose has received in death.

The Plákata Nation crew discussed the latest news that MLB commissioner Rob Manfred has removed Pete Rose, Shoeless Joe Jackson and other deceased players from MLB’s ineligible list.

With Manfred’s decision, the National Baseball Hall of Fame announced that Rose’s case will be considered in 2027 when the Hall’s BBWAA Historical Overview Committee decides the next ERA Committee Ballot for players who made their biggest contributions before 1980.

Ortiz, who is a member of the Hall’s Historical Overview Committee, explained the process by which Rose will be considered. Ortiz also explained what happens when the Era Committee meets, explaining the debates and setting that he saw as a member of the committee that elected Jim Leyland to the Hall’s Class of 2024.

The Plakata Crew also discussed Javy Baez’s resurgence in Detroit, the Twins’ impressive 11-game winning streak and Carlos Peña’s pride in Northeastern University’s 20-game winning streak.

Ortiz also raved about softball star Mya Perez, the slugger who leads No. 1 seed Texas A&M in most offensive categories.
