Carlos Beltran lives out George Brett’s Hall prediction

COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. – With a baseball and a pen in his hand, a young Carlos Beltran followed Kansas City Royals legend George Brett to meet Orlando Cepeda at the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1999.

Beltran was only 22 years old, and he had less than a full season of Major League Baseball games on his resume with the Royals. Nonetheless, Brett saw greatness in the speedy center fielder. Brett and Cepeda had just been part of one of the greatest Baseball Hall of Fame classes in history, joining Nolan Ryan and Robin Yount during that induction weekend.

Beltran was on his first trip to Cooperstown, and he was excited to meet the second man elected to the Hall of Fame from his beloved Puerto Rico. The 6-foot-1, 215-pound Beltran vividly remembers how amazed he was by the 6-foot-2 former National League MVP’s huge right hand and powerful grip. 

Beltran, 49, was dumbfounded by what Brett said when he introduced him.

“Let me introduce you to the next Hall of Famer from Puerto Rico. His name is Carlos Beltran,” Beltran remembers Brett telling Cepeda, who had joined the iconic Roberto Clemente as the second Puerto Rican inducted in the Hall.

“What are you doing?” Beltran remembers thinking. 

“I don’t think that is a good statement, George,” Beltran argued. 

“And George said, ‘Well, Carlos, everything is possible in life. If you play hard and if you continue to play well and if you continue to develop yourself this is an opportunity and this is a chance that you could be here,’” Beltran remembers.

Exactly 27 years after that introduction, Beltran will become the sixth player from Puerto Rico to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame on Sunday afternoon at Clark Events Center.

Beltran’s road to Cooperstown started in his hometown of Manati, Puerto Rico. Yet, that introduction to Cepeda in 1999 also helped guide Beltran to Cooperstown. 

A Hall of Fame seed planted

“I have no doubt that introduction put in my mind and my heart a seed in my mind that it could be possible,” Beltran said. “Thank God. It’s a story that always stays in my heart. Each time I see George, I give him a big hug.”

With Brett on hand, Beltran will be inducted along into the Hall on Sunday with his former Astros teammate Jeff Kent and Andruw Jones.

Beltran is proud to give Puerto Rico another Hall of Famer, following Clemente, Cepeda, Roberto Alomar, Ivan “Pudge” Rodriguez and Edgar Martinez.

“In my case coming from Puerto Rico, I feel very proud because there were a lot of guys in front of me who really created a better path for me to experience in baseball,” Beltran said. “And because of their effort, I hope I have done the same for others, being able to inspire them, being able to motivate them.”
