Jaime Jarrin urges immigrants to 'not be afraid'

Hall of Fame broadcaster Jaime Jarrin, the longtime Spanish voice of the Dodgers, has used his platform to support immigrants. At a time when ICE agents are terrorizing many parts of Los Angeles, Jarrin even encouraged immigrants and their supports to stay strong and let their voices be heard.

“As an immigrant who came to this country 70 years ago, I know firsthand the hope, courage, and determination it takes to build a new life in a new land,” Jarrin posted on Instagram. “I’ve always believed that immigration isn’t just part of the American story; it is the American story.”

The legendary Jarrin announced his support for the hard-working immigrants who have been affected by the recent ICE raids throughout Los Angeles. Jarrin declared his support in an Instagram post Tuesday to his 12,500 followers.

Jaime Jarrin, a native of Quito, Ecuador, called Dodgers games for a record 64 seasons, serving as the longest tenured MLB broadcaster at the time of his retirement. He is the latest Latino to use his platform to speak up for immigrants.

Jaime Jarrin joins growing chorus

Jarrin joined Becky G, Kike Hernandez, and Adrian Gonzalez and Fernando Valenzuela’s daughter Maria among those who have spoken out against the recent ICE raids.

Jarrin is a prominent voice for many Latinos in Los Angeles. Generations of Latinos proudly tuned in to listen to Jarrin broadcast Dodgers games in Spanish. His stance immigrants is important for Latinos around baseball and beyond.

“Los Angeles is my home,” Jaime Jarrin wrote on Instagram. “This city is my family. And it breaks my heart to see the growing division in our community and across the country.

“Every one of us deserves to be treated with dignity, with respect, and with humanity.”

Many in the Los Angeles community have expressed their displeasure about the Dodgers’ silence. Many have lamented that the Dodgers haven’t spoken up for the peaceful protesters or immigrants.

Silent Dodgers

Some have noted that the Dodgers announced support for Israel in October of 2023. The Dodgers’ silence has disappointed many in their large Latino fan base. The Dodgers capitalize economically off the community’s Latino culture by having Mexican Heritage Night and donning Los Dodgers on their City Connect jerseys.

But the Dodgers have stayed quiet when the Latino community needs the Dodgers’ support. The silence has been noted by a group who fills the Dodger Stadium, buys their concessions, sports their jerseys and fills their roster.

“In the face of the injustices and heartbreak we’ve witnessed, I am deeply proud of the thousands who have taken to the streets peacefully; standing tall, raising their voices, and refusing to be silenced,” Jarrin wrote. “Your courage matters. Your presence matters.”

While the Dodgers franchise stays silent, Latinos in Los Angeles continue to speak up. Jarrin is the latest to express his support for peaceful protesters demanding rights and respect for immigrants.

“Do not be afraid,” Jarrin said. “Stay strong. Keep showing up. Let your voice be heard.”
