Chiefs running back Isiah Pacheco chases more NFL history

Isiah Pacheco heads to third consecutive Super Bowl

Isiah Pacheco is set to chase more National Football League history. The Kansas City Chiefs’ running back is heading to the Super Bowl for the third consecutive year.

The defending two-time champion Chiefs will face the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans on Feb. 9 in a rematch of Super Bowl LVII.

Pacheco helped the Chiefs beat the Buffalo Bills, 32-29, on Sunday night in the AFC Championship Game. The former Rutgers University star already owns a place in the NFL’s history books. Last year he became the first running back to start and win Super Bowl titles in each of his first two seasons.

The New Jersey native with Puerto Rican roots will try to become the first Latino player to win three Super Bowl rings. He’s currently tied with former Super Bowl MVP Jim Plunkett, kicker Raul Allegre and defensive tackle Tony Casillas for the most Super Bowl titles by a Latino player.

Hall of Fame coach Tom Flores, the first Latino coach to win a Super Bowl title, holds the record for the most Super Bowl rings by a Latino.
Flores won four Super Bowl rings combined between his coaching and playing careers. The Mexican American legend won his first championship ring as a backup quarterback for the Chiefs in 1970. He didn’t play in that Super Bowl, though.

Then Flores won a ring as an assistant coach with the Oakland Raiders in Super Bowl XI against the Minnesota Vikings on Jan. 9, 1977. Four years later, Flores was the Oakland Raiders’ head coach when he made history as the first Latino head coach to win a Super Bowl.

Until then, no person of color had coached a team to a Super Bowl title before Flores in 1981.

Plunkett was Flores’ starting quarterback and MVP of that 1981 Super Bowl, becoming the first Mexican American quarterback to win a title as a starter. Three years later, Flores won his fourth ring while Plunkett won his second as the Los Angeles Raiders beat the Washington Redskins.

Allegre won a pair of championship rings with the New York Giants in Super Bowls XXI and XXV in 1987 and 1991. He played and even kicked off Super Bowl XXI, but he didn’t play in Super Bowl XXV. Casillas helped the Cowboys win consecutive Super Bowls in 1993 and 1994 against the Buffalo Bills.

Pacheco has played a pivotal role in the last two Super Bowls for the Chiefs. He rushed for 76 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries in the 38-35 victory over the Eagles two years ago.

Last year Pacheco rushed for 59 yards on 18 carries against the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII. He added six catches for 33 yards.

Now Pacheco will start preparing to chase the ultimate three-peat to make more history.
