FSA: Can Astros’ Cam Smith break Opening Day roster

  • March 6, 2025

The Astros’ Cam Smith has been a force to be reckoned with early this spring. The Lake Worth, Fla., native has left Houston and manager Joe Espada impressed thus far. Cantu and Zo give their thoughts on Smith’s stellar Spring Training.

Cam Smith’s hot start

Smith has gotten seven at-bats for the Astros. He’s recorded four hits, four runs, and six RBIs. He’s also smashed two home runs. Smith has surely given the Astros something to consider. The boys discuss the questions many Astro fans have pondered. Will Cam Smith be on the Astros’ Opening Day roster? Tune in to see why the boys don’t think it will be likely.

However, the Astro’s No. 1 prospect likely donning an Astros uniform during the regular season is possible.

Jose Altuve has started twice in left field. In his first outing, Altuve received no action. Nonetheless, the 2017 MVP made a pair of great catches on the warning track during Sunday’s game against Nationals. Some growing pains were seen from Altuve. He made a throwing error in the seventh and battled the wind during one of his catches.

Altuve in left field

The two-time World Series Champion is definitely having fun in the outfield. After his first catch in leftfield, Altuve tipped his hat to the bullpen to celebrate his catch.

Espada wouldn’t reveal if the Altuve experiment in left field is permanent, but Altuve hasn’t trained at second. However, once a decision is made, Espada said that switching their All-Star back and forth is something he wants to avoid.

While many great things are happening for the Astros in Spring Training, Houston was hit with an injury once again. Newly-signed first baseman Christian Walker was scratched from the lineup on Wednesday due to oblique soreness.

Houston also reassigned third ranked prospect Jacob Melton, Tommy Sacco Jr., Miguel Palma, Aaron Brown, and Jose Fleury to minor-league camp.
