Astros Spanish broadcaster, Francisco Romero
Deuces wild! In the 222 episode of Full Seam Ahead, Lorenzo Delgado and Angel Cantu welcomed special guest Francisco Romero to the show. In an exclusive interview with the Astros Spanish radio broadcaster, the boys highlighted Romero’s incredible career.
Broadcasting journey
Francisco Romero, who has been in the radio booth for the Astros since 2008, reminisced on his journey from being a child living in the Arizona frontier to witnessing two World Series Championships for the Astros. Can you still become a broadcaster without a journalism degree? The Astros Spanish broadcaster shares what his major was in college and how important it is to attend college. Romero talked about his fond memories of the late Dodgers great Fernando Valenzuela. The 1981 Rookie of the Year’s screwball had Romero and Mexico close to the radio. Romero explains how FernandoMania was a special time for not just Latinos, but for the game of baseball.
“Rene Cardenas deserves to be in the Hall of Fame”
Zo and Cantu asked the Emmy Award Winner about who was his biggest influence, and of course Astros Hall of Famer Rene Cardenas was the answer. Romero talks about the relationship he has with Cardenas and why he deserves to win the Ford C. Frick Award. The prestigious award is presented annually by the National Baseball Hall of Fame to a broadcaster for their major contributions to baseball.
Early in the offseason, Romero tells the audience which free agent he wants to continue to see in an Astros uniform. Furthermore, he also discusses the needs the Astros have to address. Romero finished the night by talking about his favorite call in his 16-year career with the Astros, and shared great advice to anyone pursuing a career in broadcasting and the desire to join the booth.
This is one you don’t want to miss.
