Angel Correa, Tigres, feel at home routing Houston Dynamo
Tigres dominate Dynamo in Leagues Cup opener
HOUSTON – Dynamo FC were technically the home team, but the sellout crowd of 21,972 at Shell Energy Stadium made the Leagues Cup match feel more like a home game for Tigres UANL.
Chants of “La U,” a nod to the Autonomous University of Nuevo León in Monterrey, Mexico, echoed throughout the stadium Tuesday night. They were accompanied by chants of “Tigres!”
Tigres’ fans took home-field advantage away from the Dynamo faithful, and the Tigres made themselves at home on the pitch with a dominant 4-1 victory to start Leagues Cup play.
In the center of it all was the man of the match: 2022 World Cup champion Angel Correa. The veteran Argentine forward’s performance fueled the chants of Tigres’ fans throughout the match.
Correa started his professional career with Club Atletico San Lorenzo de Almagro in 2013. He helped his team win Copa Libertadores in 2014. After signing in May of 2014 with Atlético Madrid, the Rosario native joined the club in December 2014 after undergoing surgery for a heart condition. Correa made his debut for Atlético Madrid in August 2015 against Las Palmas.
Angel Correa brace
He was a part of Argentina’ 2022 World Cup championship team. After 10 seasons with Atletico Madrid, Correa joined Tigres UANL on July 9 for Liga MX’s Apertura 2025.
Correa put Tigres on the board in the last minute of the first half to take the early lead. He brought down a long ball by Juan Brunetta, and then scored with a right-footed shot from outside the box.

Dynamo midfielder Ondřej Lingr tied the score in the third minute of the second half. Tigres took the lead for good 15 minutes later. Winger Diego Lainez intercepted a poor pass by Dynamo goalkeeper Jonathan Bond and then put the ball in the back of the net.
In the 70th minute, Correa capitalized on another Dynamo blunder. Dynamo captain Artur’s long pass attempt to Bond came up short. Correa had space to run. He scored his second goal of the night giving Tigres a 3-1 lead over the Dynamo.
Dynamo mistakes
“We made many mistakes that cost us goals against a quality team like Tigres,” Artur said. “They don’t give you chances.”
Correa and Lainez were subbed off the field in the 81st minute. They received a standing ovation as “Tragos Amargos,” which was popularized by singer Ramon Ayala, played in the background.
Ozziel Herrera added a goal in stoppage time in the 97th minute to cap the rout.
Overall, the team played a good game, we just have to minimize the mistakes and keep working. This hurts, we have to keep working hard to find our consistency.”
