Jose Altuve wins 7th Silver Slugger Award
Jose Altuve ties record for second basemen
Astros great Jose Altuve added another record to his Hall of Fame resume Tuesday night. The former American League MVP won his seventh Louisville Slugger Silver Slugger Award, tying the record for most Silver Slugger Awards won by a second baseman.
In setting the record for Silver Sluggers at his position in the American League, he tied Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg for the most Silver Sluggers by second basemen.
Sandberg won seven Silver Sluggers in the National League with the Chicago Cubs. Moreover, the seven awards for hitting excellence are the most won by any player in Astros history regardless of position. Louisville Slugger began awarding Silver Sluggers in 1980 to the best hitters at each position in each league.
The previous franchise record for Silver Sluggers was held by Hall of Famer Craig Biggio, who won five Silver Sluggers. Biggio, who spent 20 seasons with the Astros, won four Silver Sluggers at second base and one as a catcher. Hall of Famer Jeff Bagwell won three Silver Sluggers.
Jose Altuve leads Venezuelan Silver Sluggers
Altuve, 34, left little doubt that he was the best AL second baseman at the plate in 2024. The nine-time All-Star led AL second basemen in most offensive metrics.
He led the league’s second baseman with a .295 batting average, 185 hits, 31 doubles, a .350 on-base percentage and .439 slugging percentage.
Altuve was second among AL second basemen with 20 home runs and 65 RBIs. Altuve also scored 94 runs and stole 22 bases.
Altuve, a native of Puerto Cabello, Venezuela, was one of four Venezuelans who won Silver Sluggers. Both of the catchers who won Silver Sluggers are Venezuelan. Kansas City Royals captain Salvador Perez, a nine-time All-Star catcher, won his fifth Silver Slugger.
Milwaukee Brewers catcher William Contreras won his second Silver Slugger in the NL. Orioles outfielder Anthony Santander won his first Silver Slugger.
